Progress on the Strategic eFABIS Project Led by the BorgWarner | CTAG | Binarial Consortium

A strategic renewal of BorgWarner’s production plant in Vigo, enabling the manufacturing of new products based on R&D.

The eFABIS project is focused on research and development in key Manufacturing technologies, with the aim of generating new production processes that allow BorgWarner to transition toward a new business strategy based on sustainability and digitalization. This strategy is designed to address the challenges of future mobility, particularly in relation to electric and connected vehicles. The initiative is supported by CTAG as a leading research organization for the automotive sector in Galicia, and by Binarial as a technology-based SME specialized in high-performance production processes.

During the first phase of the project, significant progress has been made across the different research lines defined, namely:

  • Development of eProcesses and Advanced Robotics: Design, development, and optimization of new production processes for the manufacturing of eCoolers.

  • Testing and validation of newly developed processes: Creation of new methodologies and advanced tools for validating these production processes, along with the launch of initial tests.

  • Logistics 4.0: Analysis, design, and optimization for the development of a tailored AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot), adapted to the specific requirements of the new production process.

The main expected outcome of this project is to initiate a strategic transformation of BorgWarner’s production plant in Vigo, enabling the manufacture of new, disruptive, advanced, and higher value-added products for electric and connected vehicles, driven by R&D.

The strategic eFABIS project is funded by the Galician Innovation Agency (Axencia Galega de Innovación) of the Xunta de Galicia, under the call “Fábrica Intelixente e Sustentable 2023” (Official Gazette No. 128, July 6, 2023), with file reference IN854A 2023/07, and co-funded by the European Union.
